Since the success of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, many fans of Capcom’s survival horror franchise are wondering if Resident Evil 5 is next, but there’s some controversy that could hold it back.

Resident Evil 4 received a beautiful remake that has taken the gaming community by storm, receiving wonderful reviews. Capcom brought the iconic title back to life in 2023 and modernized it, but it isn’t the first time they’ve done this, as the Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakes received similar praise.

While Resident Evil 9 is still reportedly in the works to follow up the franchise’s most recent addition to the timeline in Village, many players are wondering if any other Resident Evil games will be getting a remake, more specifically Resident Evil 5.

That said, controversy surrounds the title, so let’s get into the details on whether Resident Evil 5 will be getting a remake.

Resident Evil 5 controversy

Resident Evil 5’s story received major complaints of racism when it was revealed, as Capcom was under fire for their depiction of African zombies as antagonists against a white, American protagonist in Chris Redfield.

An E3 trailer for the game in 2007 sparked initial controversy, as it portrayed Chris Redfield fighting against solely African zombies in a remote village. After the backlash, the devs released a second trailer that portrayed a more diverse group of enemies and also included the game’s second playable character, Sheva, who was an African BSAA agent.

While Capcom were accused of including Sheva to combat allegations, Karen Dyer, the voice and motion capture artist for Sheva, insisted that the character had been in development prior to the accusations and that the game was not racially fuelled in a negative manner.

Resident Evil 5 introduced players to both Chris and Sheva as playable characters in co-op.

The developers took the controversy and feedback in, making further development changes in an attempt to move away from the controversy. When the game was eventually released, it was a success, but the stigma was never truly reversed.

Will there be a Resident Evil 5 Remake?

As reported by GameDeveloper, Capcom has supposedly now put “measures in place to stop controversies like the race flap that dogged Resident Evil 5 from occurring again.”

If this is true, it’s unlikely that Resident Evil 5 will see a remake, and even if it does, it may be vastly different from the original.

The next title that will be released for the Resident Evil franchise will likely be Resident Evil 9, which not much is known about. However, if you’d like to stay updated, stay tuned on CharlieIntel.
