Mushroom is a popular crafting ingredient in Minecraft that can be used for decoration and composting as well. Here’s how you can find and grow your own mushrooms in Minecraft.

Every item in Minecraft serves a special purpose and has unique characteristics. This includes mushrooms that only grow in places with low light. Fun fact, they’re one of the oldest items in the game.

While collecting them from the Overworld, The Nether, or The End is always an option, farming is much more reliable and convenient. On that note, this guide will teach you everything about growing mushrooms in Minecraft.

Where to find mushrooms in Minecraft?

You first need to collect naturally growing mushrooms to make your own mushrooms in Minecraft. The fungus grows in dark places which statistically speaking, have a light level of 12 or less.

Accordingly, here are some places where you can expect to collect mushrooms:

  • Swamps
  • Mushroom field biomes that are full of huge mushrooms and Mooshrooms (cow mobs with red and white mushrooms on them)
  • The Nether’s bedrock ceiling
  • Dark caves underground

You can instantly mine mushrooms with any tool but keep in mind that enchantments like Fortune won’t affect the output.

How to grow your own mushrooms in Minecraft

Minecraft players can plant mushrooms in areas with low light (light level 12 or less). However, if you have blocks like Mycelium, Podzol, or Nylium, you can grow mushrooms under direct sunlight.

You can find Mycelium, Podzol, or Nylium in these places:

  • Mycelium – only found in the mushroom fields biome and should be mined with the Silk Touch enchantment.
  • Podzol – found in jungles with tall trees and bamboo jungles.
  • Nylium – found in the Nether.

If you don’t have Mycelium, Podzol, or Nylium, it is best to make a damp room and grow mushrooms inside it. Planting them under trees with shade is another great option.

To avoid mobs in dark areas where you grow mushrooms, simply place soul torches. They emit light level 10 which is enough to scare enemies and keep the mushroom healthy.

Unlike other crops, mushrooms don’t require water or other resources. Moreover, a mushroom can spread if there are less than five mushrooms of the same type in a 9x9x3 area.

Mushrooms can also be placed in pots regardless of light but they won’t spread or grow in them.

Huge mushroom in Minecraft

How to grow huge mushrooms in Minecraft

You need bone meal to grow a large mushroom in Minecraft. Just put bone (dropped by skeleton mobs) or bone block in a crafting table to obtain bone meal and then apply it to a mushroom. Obviously, the fungus should be placed on a proper block and should have enough space (7x7x9) to grow.

Huge mushrooms can help you get over 15 small mushrooms directly. Moreover, if you mine them with the Silk Touch enchantment, they drop mushroom blocks that can be used for decoration or building.
