NPD: Call of Duty is the best selling franchise in the US for 10th year in a row, Black Ops 4 is the second best selling game
The NPD Data for December 2018 and the entire year 2018 has been released showing the game industry’s result for the year in the United States.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 ended the year as the #2 best selling game based on dollar sales, coming in right behind Red Dead Redemption 2. NPD’s Mat Piscatella stated that the “race to the best-seller position in software was very close” and noted that NPD does not track PC digital sales, meaning the charts do not include Black Ops 4’s Battle.net numbers.
NPD has confirmed that Call of Duty – combining the sales of all actively sold Call of Duty titles tracked by NPD – is the best selling video game franchise in the US for 10th year in a row. Both Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Call of Duty: WWII made an appearance on the top 20 chart for the 2018 year. Here’s the chart for the Best Selling Games of 2018 in the US:
For the month of December, Super Smash Bros, the new Nintendo Switch title, was the best selling game of the month and led the Nintendo Switch to become the best selling hardware of the month. The PlayStation 4 ended the year as the best selling hardware overall.
In terms of per platform, surprisingly, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was actually the best selling game on Xbox One in 2018; on PS4, it was the #2 game behind Red Dead Redemption 2.
Activision has not stated the latest sales numbers for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 since initially announcing the game earned $500 million in its opening weekend. The title was the #1 best selling game in October, followed by becoming the best selling title of the year through November.
