To celebrate the Halloween season, Warzone players have been treated to the ‘Haunting of Verdansk” game mode, but players claim that “annoying” jumpscares are souring the experience.

Warzone’s The Haunting event has introduced a brand new mode for players to get stuck into called “Ghosts of Verdansk.” Upon death, players become ghosts and perform a variety of supernatural actions, but the main talking point has been the jumpscares that can happen to players.

Jumpscare culture has exploded in popularity in the last 10 years, largely due to the emergence of indie horror games such as Five Nights at Freddy’s and Amnesia.

Now, Warzone’s Ghosts of Verdansk has followed suit, although, players are not overly keen on the hallucinations that can appear every so often.

One of the key aspects of The Haunting’s new themed mode is the Fear Meter which slowly increases during a match, demanding players keep on top of it.

Failure to do so will result in hallucinations that can suddenly pop up on your screen and prevent the player from being able to see.

The reception to them hasn’t been completely positive with two Reddit posts voicing their displeasure for the hallucinations. Approaching 2K upvotes, the “Thank you Activision for making this very fun gamemode. These animations are not annoying at all” post features a variety of negative comments.

One player said: “Bro those are RuneScape graphics” and another player added: “Thanks for sharing this. I was thinking about trying the update but now I don’t have too.”

Whereas another Reddit post titled “I want to have a chat with whoever thought this was a good idea” expanded upon these sentiments.

The OP bigappleman6946 said: “I played a total of 2 rounds with my regular squad where we lost gunfights because of this. We went straight back to rebirth/br.” Another player commented on the jumpscare saying: “Yeah that’s the worst one. The others I can deal with but that one is horrendous.”

One of the main criticisms of the mode was directed towards the Fear Meter with the OP also adding that: “The fear meter is useless. I don’t mind the occasional jumpscare, but when they are every 15 seconds and block the entire screen during a gunfight? What a joke.”

The Haunting event isn’t sticking around for too long as it finishes on November 2, so we don’t expect too many changes to the system already in place.
