Activision Blizzard generated $3.3 billion from microtransactions in 2019

As part of the Activision Blizzard Q4 Earnings Call, the company announced an updated number for how much the company has made from microtransactions in 2019. 

“Our fourth quarter results exceeded our prior outlook for both revenue and earnings per share,” said Bobby Kotick, Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. “Our recent Call of Duty® success illustrates the scale of our growth potential, as we expanded the community to more players in more countries on more platforms than ever before. With our strong content pipeline across our franchises and momentum in mobile, esports, and advertising, we look forward to continuing to delight our players, fans and stakeholders in 2020 and beyond.”

The company announced that they have generated $3.3 billion in revenue from MTX sales from all their titles, including Call of Duty, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Warcraft, and more. 

For the year ended December 31, 2019, in-game net bookingwere $3.37 billion.

For the quarter ended December 31, 2019, in-game net bookings were $1.09 billion.

The number continues to be astonishing as the industry continues to grow thanks to MTX sales and new MTX models. 

For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Activision changed the in-game revenue model from having a Supply Drop system to a cosmetic Battle Pass system that resembles Fortnite and other popular games today. Reports from SuperData earlier this year suggest the new system is off to a strong start for Activision.
