Overwatch 2 is aiming to be an all-inclusive shooter, but have Blizzard enabled crossplay? Not only that but will Overwatch 2 support any form of cross-progression? Let’s find out.

Crossplay is a huge part of the gaming ecosystem and has been a massive influence in big-name titles such as Fortnite and Rocket League.

The huge success of this concept has enabled the likes of Apex Legends and CoD Warzone to incorporate crossplay, and players are hoping for Overwatch 2 to join in.

For a large game audience like Overwatch, crossplay seems to be the next logical step for the community and brand. Despite the demand for crossplay and cross-progression across multiplayer games, it’s not mandatory in the eyes of developers, so has Blizzard followed suit with Overwatch 2?

Will Overwatch 2 have crossplay or cross-progression?

On June 12, 2022, Blizzard formally announced that Overwatch 2 would be supporting both crossplay across multiple platforms, as well as the ability to carry over progress between said platforms to allow greater accessibility and easier ways of maintaining your standing in the game.

Blizzard’s press release had this to say: “Featuring a new five-versus-five multiplayer format with cross-platform play and cross-platform progression, Overwatch 2’s PvP experience is designed to offer incredible and fresh competitive gameplay with a new, free-to-play model and major game updates such as new heroes, hero reworks, maps, modes, and premium cosmetics.”

Crossplay is a system that connects players in a game, regardless of platform. PC users can play with console users, and console players are free to engage with members of another console platform e.g Nintendo Switch with Xbox, PlayStation with PC, etc.

Whereas cross-progression means that you could finish up a game of Overwatch 2 on your PS5, turn off the console, and then immediately take your live account to a PC and keep leveling up that way.

Both additions are nothing but good news for fans, especially ones who enjoyed the beta, and these new features can be enjoyed by anyone as the game is free-to-play for all players.
