Hogwarts Legacy, an upcoming adventure RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter releases in February. But will Harry Potter’s creator J.K. Rowling profit from the game?

Harry Potter fans will have the freedom to choose their wand, explore Hogwarts, and attend classes with February’s Hogwarts Legacy.

But, there has also been some controversy surrounding the title. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has been accused of transphobia after a series of controversial statements that appeared to support TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminism) ideology.

Because of these comments, transgender people and supporters of the transgender community are choosing to boycott Hogwarts Legacy in an attempt to push back against her apparent views. This begs the question, will J.K. Rowling profit from Hogwarts Legacy, and how involved is she with the game?

Will J.K. Rowling profit from Hogwarts Legacy?

J.K. Rowling will profit from Hogwarts Legacy’s sales. The Harry Potter IP is still under her ownership, and Rowling will be granted royalties from its sales. Thus, making money from every Hogwarts Legacy purchase.

Is J.K. Rowling involved with Hogwarts Legacy?

No, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has not been directly involved with the development of Hogwarts Legacy.

In an FAQ, the developers confirmed that she “is not involved in the creation of the game,” and that “this is not a new story from J.K. Rowling.” However, they have “collaborated closely with her team on all aspects of the game.”

Hogwarts Legacy takes inspiration and features locations and characters from the Harry Potter universe, all created and owned by J.K. Rowling. This means that she will earn royalty cheques from Hogwarts Legacy, thus profiting from its sales.
