The Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 player count has dropped greatly, recording the lowest amount of active users since launch.

Call of Duty is one of the biggest franchises in gaming, and when Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 arrived, they broke records in terms of sales and were extremely successful, boasting a large player base.

Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 also released on Steam, after Call of Duty had a long stint away from the PC platform, exciting players and no doubt bringing more eyes to both titles. While initial success was prevalent, now, in the Season 2 Reloaded update, the games have recorded their lowest player count since launch.

Reddit user coone90 highlighted the game’s low player count in a post titled “MWII / WZ2 have below 90k active players in last 24h. The largest decreases since the premiere.”

For a game as big as Call of Duty, this is pretty shocking, especially as competitors such as Apex Legends and Destiny 2 are both higher than Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on the Steam Charts.

In the comments, players argue about reasons for the sharp decline in player count, with one comment blaming “the strict SBMM sucking the fun out of multiplayer, as well as the questionable design decisions such as the Perk system, no red dots, dead silence and weak and uninspiring killstreaks.”

This player feels Infinity Ward decided to make the game “as punishing for good players as possible,” arguing this as a reason for a declining playerbase. Another comment claims that they are “not surprised,” as they call the game a “soulless money grab.”

As for Warzone 2, players under the post don’t think WZ2 has “the charm WZ1 did,” causing people to “give up on it.”

Of course, when a new update drops there tends to be a period of increase and then slow decline, as players have experienced the new content already. However, it’s not been long since the Season 2 Reloaded update was released, and the fact that it’s the lowest since launch could be quite telling, although it is only the PC player count so keep that in mind as well.
