Ubisoft comments on “Far Cry 6 Beta” phishing scam
Far Cry publisher Ubisoft has warned players about a phishing scam targeting various content creators.
A stern warning has been issued for content creators in the YouTube space. Currently, there is a phishing email going around to creators informing them that they have been selected to play Far Cry 6 early.
The email sender is quite convincing, even coming from a domain called farcry6.us. The email itself is fairly innocent, with mostly proper formatting for a business email, and even offers the creator compensation for playing in the beta.
You can see the email in its entirety below. Take note of the attention to formatting and how official the email actually looks when compared to traditional phishing scams.
The email attracted the attention of popular YouTuber, theRadBrad, who posted about the scam on his Twitter account, stating, “Just a heads up to all content creators. There is an email from the official Ubisoft address going around that claims beta access to Far Cry 6.”
He continues, “It even has an embargo with a special password for access. The virus watches your screen and records everything you do. Be safe.”
Soon after this tweet was posted, it garnered the attention of Ubisoft themselves. In response to Brad’s Tweet, the official Ubisoft Twitter posted, “We can confirm the email regarding FC6 beta access is a phishing attempt. It has been reported. Please do not respond if you have received this email or similar. Thank you for the report!”
Hopefully, Ubisoft figures out a way to shut down this scam. If you know any content creators, make sure to make them aware of this issue. Phishing isn’t a new strategy to hijack personal information, but this particular strategy aimed at content creators is quite concerning.
Perhaps in the future, the same scam will be attempted, using another game instead. Be sure to stay vigilant.
