Sony acquire Destiny developer Bungie
Sony has announced that they’re set to acquire Destiny publisher Bungie in a deal nearing $3.6 billion.
Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan announced that they are set to acquire Bungie, the developers behind Halo’s inception, and the Destiny franchise.
Sony said on January 31, 2022, that their plans to acquire Bungie are moving forward for a reported fee of $3.6 billion, “We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family”.
Shortly after news of the acquisition broke, we got details concerning the future operations between the companies. As it turns out, Bungie will remain independent from Sony and continue to publish games on multiple platforms.
This is the second massive acquisition to take place in the gaming industry in recent weeks following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Ryan has also claimed that Sony have been working on this major acquisition for almost five months. In addition, the CEO suggests that there are “more acquisitions to come” which has left gamers wondering what surprises might be in store.
