Players frustrated as Cold War’s huge file size continues to grow on PS5
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s infamous file size is challenging the patience of PS5 players once more as the recent Season 4 update has increased it again.
Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War has recently released the fourth season of its lifecycle, and in doing so added many cool new items to the game. Between the remake of Hijacked and the all-powerful MG 82 LMG, there is lots to admire about Season 4.
But a glaring issue that continues to be amplified with every passing Call of Duty update is the game’s file size. It takes up a huge chunk of the PS5’s storage, and players are desperate for Treyarch to compress it.
Black Ops Cold War is comprised of many components including its campaign, Zombies, and online. They all take up a large amount of space and collectively can occupy over 200GB of the PS5’s storage.

Cold War player switchondem posted a new thread on Reddit complaining about this very issue saying, “This game is now 219.8 GB on PS5, which has 667.2 GB of free console storage space to start with. The tech to compress it exists, but the file size just keeps increasing.”
It’s true that players have the option to manually uninstall individual aspects of the game to reduce the file size, e.g the campaign and Zombies can be uninstalled if the player is only interested in the online multiplayer.
The_Unreliable_94 said that removing the campaign greatly brings the total number down: “Without the campaign, the PS5 version weighs in at around 154GB.”
But 154 GB is still a lot, especially in comparison to larger open-world games that are much bigger and require far less space.
Given that a fully-installed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes up nearly a third of the PS5’s HDD, the problem becomes even bigger when you factor in that many Cold War players also enjoy Warzone too.
Activision’s battle royale shooter has also been criticized for constantly adding to its file size, and having both installed can equate to over 400 GB of purely Call of Duty – leaving little room for much else.
