Will Overwatch 2 have a story mode? Release date, PvE, plot, more

For those co-op-hungry PvE players who are also fans of Blizzard’s Overwatch, you may be in luck as Overwatch 2 is set to get a free-to-play story mode.

Overwatch 2 is finally here, bringing the game’s first-ever season filled with various cosmetics that players can obtain through the Battle Pass.

While players try to level up as fast as possible and enjoy the three new characters, Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko, some may dip into the competitive side of things, or keep it more casual with Arcade and Quick Play.

Having said that, Blizzard have previously announced that the game will feature a PvE story mode, but as it is not available at the moment, many are wondering when Overwatch 2’s story mode will release.

Overwatch 2 story mode release date

Currently, there’s no official release date for Overwatch 2’s story mode, but the devs have confirmed that it is set to launch in 2023.

Clearly, Blizzard have decided to focus on the PvP multiplayer side of things for now, making sure everything is flowing nicely with all the big changes like 5v5 instead of 6v6.

Overwatch 2 story mode details

Overwatch 2’s story mode is a permanent PvE co-op experience that sees players battle their way through a full story-driven campaign, delving deeper into the Overwatch lore and world.

The gameplay is said to be wave based and similar to that of Left 4 Dead. Players can select any hero on the roster, and the missions will take place on all of the existing maps, with some even including additional areas.

Is Overwatch 2 story mode free?

Overwatch 2’s PvE campaign is part of the free-to-play package, meaning that players across all platforms can enjoy the story mode for free just like the PvP.

Heroes from Overwatch 2’s roster will all be available for players to enjoy in the story mode, and once players finish the campaign, there will even be Hero Missions as endgame content.

The devs plan on introducing hundreds of these Hero missions, which they claim can be played “night after night” without feeling repetitive.

At Blizzcon 2019, the Overwatch 2 devs revealed the details about the hero shooter’s new story mode, including the plot.

The Heroes from the first game’s roster will have to reunite in order to uncover the truth behind another Omnic uprising. The missions will have cinematics, along with gameplay and musical themes for each hero and location.

Talents system in Overwatch 2 story mode

When playing the Heroes in Overwatch 2’s campaign mode, players will have access to a skill tree and unlockable upgrades that are exclusive to PvE.

The new “Talents” progression system will launch with the Overwatch 2 story mode in 2023, and it will allow players to upgrade Hero abilities and power through PVE co-op missions.
