Overwatch 2 will be getting a brand-new Hero in Season 2 of the free-to-play game, with many speculating that it could be Mauga.
Overwatch 2 Season 1 arrived with three brand-new heroes for players to get to grips with, Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko.
While the new Heroes, maps, Push game mode, and change to 5v5 gameplay has kept players occupied, the community can’t help but speculate what the new content for Overwatch 2 Season 2 will be.
The devs have already confirmed that a new map will be released, which could potentially be India or Gothenburg, but Blizzard also revealed that Season 2 will bring a new Tank Hero.
This has left players speculating that it could be Mauga, a character who has been seen in Baptiste’s short story.
Overwatch 2 Mauga details
Overwatch’s Mauga is a Talon Heavy Assault which, according to the Overwatch Fandom, is a type of Talon infantry that appear as bosses in various Overwatch events such as Retribution and Storm Rising.
Talon Heavy Assault look similar to Tank Heroes, as their character models are larger and wear heavy armor. That said, Mauga is likely to be a Tank Hero, and that’s exactly what the devs have stated will be arriving in Season 2.
Mauga is tall and muscular, and Baptiste, who went on numerous extractions with him, describes the brute as “a demon.” The name Mauga is actually Samoan, and it means “mountain,” which is fitting for the character’s size.
Is Mauga the new Overwatch 2 Season 2 Hero?
Although it has not been confirmed, leaks and rumors have suggested that Mauga was meant to be Hero 31, but was replaced by Sigma.
Many believe Mauga will be the next Hero as Overwatch Director Aaron Keller revealed that the Season 2 Hero will be “male and be tied to the new map.” The dev also stated that the community have seen the new Hero before, leaving players thinking about Mauga’s appearance in Baptiste’s short story.
Ultimately, nothing is confirmed so take this all with a pinch of salt, as some even feel that there is a chance for a different outcome, with the Storm Rising omnic boss also lurking in the background. Once Blizzard reveal some official news, we’ll be sure to update this piece.
Overwatch 2 Mauga abilities
Nothing has been confirmed about Mauga’s arrival in Overwatch, let alone his abilities. However, as the character is said to be a Talon Heavy Assault, we can assume that he will be a Tank.
Mauga’s abilities could be similar to what’s known about a Talon Heavy Assault’s kit, who are said to be “products of extensive genetic engineering” who have an “extremely powerful exoskeleton and stimulants to increase their combat effectiveness.”
According to the Overwatch wiki, Mauga is “proficient in close combat,” which suggests his kit will and in-game strategy will be close-range. As Mauga has a relationship with Baptiste, perhaps the two will make a good combo in-game.
