Infinity Ward says they’re aware of concerns over Modern Warfare download size
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone are some of the largest game files out any game to release yet. The studio continues to release massive updates on average between 10 to 30GB for each platform, causing many users to have limited space on their platforms after downloading each new update for the game.
In an interview with USGamer, Infinity Ward Production Director Paul Haile says the studio is ‘cognizant’ of the overall size of the game and ‘working’ to manage the overall footprint over the title.
But he did note in the interview that they do want to support these games with more free updates and that will cause the size to change as they bring out more features.
He also notes that they have made the DLC Pack management system – where users are downloading additional content packs for each mode – specifically to allow players to uninstall packs for modes they don’t want to play.
“Modern Warfare and Warzone are both massive experiences with tons of ways to play and new content being added regularly, and we are cognizant of the overall download size,” Haile writes over email. “As a team we are committed to updating the game with new free content of course, but have also taken steps for overall footprint management, including a DLC pack management screen for console users. This allows players to pick and choose which DLC packs they want to keep, and remove the others to recover more space.”
After this week’s update, Modern Warfare full package sits at around 185GB on PC and around 150GB on console total.
Infinity Ward is treating Modern Warfare and Warzone as two separate games to maintain with updates, fixes, and new content.
“[It’s] no small amount of work,” says Smith with a laugh, about maintaining Warzone alongside the rest of Modern Warfare. “Every time we layer on a new piece, we’re like, ‘Oh! There’s more things we have to maintain,'” adds Cecot.
