Insomniac Games have announced they’re developing a brand-new Wolverine game, bringing the X-Men hero to life like never before. Here’s everything we know about Wolverine so far, including rumors about its release date.

When Insomniac Games launched its first Spider-Man title back in 2018, it was quickly regarded as one of the best superhero games of all time, rivaling the beloved Batman Arkham series.

They built on the success with the equally adored Spider-Man: Miles Morales two years later, and have a fully-fledged sequel coming later on in 2023. But the developer has also announced that another iconic Marvel hero will be getting the AAA video game treatment – Wolverine.

Here are all the details we have so far about Insomnic’s Wolverine game, from early story details to when it could release.

Is there a Wolverine release date?

Although Insomniac Games first revealed Wolverine way back in 2021, there is still no official release date attached to the project. However, leaks and rumors have given us a rough idea of when we’ll finally be able to don the iconic claws.

According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, the devs are aiming to drop the game in Fall 2024. However, the expectation internally is that it could be pushed until 2025.

Sadly, it seems like Wolverine is still some way off, but we could see a more exact release date announced in the coming months.

Insomniac’s Wolverine game is set to be the first standalone title since 2009.

Wolverine platforms

Wolverine will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5, due to Insomniac’s status as a Sony first-party studio. This spells bad news for Microsoft fans, as it means that it almost definitely won’t make its way to Xbox platforms.

However, the original Spider-Man did come to PC four years after release, so Steam players can hold out hope that Wolverine will follow the same pattern.

Wolverine story details

The devs haven’t offered too many details on the story at the heart of the Wolverine game, but Jeff Grubb reported that it will focus on Logan before he suits up and joins the X-Men.

In a Twitch stream for Giant Bomb, the insider claimed that the team “want it to stand on its own,” rather than worrying about how to incorporate the likes of Proffessor-X or Jean Gray.

However, it remains to be seen how early on in Logan’s life the game will take place, if we start the story with the classic adamantium claws, or if the bonding process will make up one of the early missions.

Wolverine gameplay details

Very little is known about how the Wolverine game will play, although a report from Insider Gaming claimed that it will feature a “God of War-like semi-open, wide-linear design.” This means the story could take players through large open areas that can be fully explored.

Grubb also mentioned that Wolverine will have an “M for Mature rating,” so that more violent gameplay features like “dismemberment” can be shown. This would comfortably make it one of the most brutal Marvel video games if the rumors turn out to be true.

Wolverine trailer

There has only been one trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine so far, in the form of a short teaser at the PlayStation Showcase in 2021. While it didn’t show off any gameplay, it does give a few small hints about the overall tone of the game.
