In role-playing titles like GTA Online, the prominence of griefers is a common issue. These players do not adhere to the role-playing rules and intentionally ruin the experience of others by harming their character and property (like cars).
GTA Online has a passive mode that takes care of griefers. Players can activate and deactivate it according to their playstyle.
From its functioning to significance, here’s everything you need to know about the passive mode in GTA Online.
What is passive mode in GTA Online?
A GTA Online player with passive mode enabled cannot kill and cannot be killed. This also applies to their vehicles but they must be sitting inside. The concept is explained to a player by Cris Formage after their first death.
Users in passive mode see a faded version of other players in passive mode. It is impossible to harm a passive player through weapons and vice versa as your weapon wheel is disabled as soon as you activate the mode.
On the flip side, other session members also see a faded version of passive characters.
Interestingly, if you somehow manage to kill a passive player, you must pay their hospital bills and vice versa.
It is worth noting that passive mode keeps you safe from PvP damage only. Altercations with cops, fights with NPCs, and fall damage can still get you wasted.
How to activate passive mode in GTA Online
Follow these steps to activate passive mode in GTA Online:
- Launch GTA Online and open the Interaction Menu.
- Make sure that you’re not a CEO or a Motorcycle Club President.
- Scroll through the Interaction Menu and choose Enable Passive Mode.
Another way to activate passive mode in GTA Online is:
- Launch the GTA Online menu that has Map, Online, Friends, Info, Settings, and Store.
- Choose Online and then Options.
- Enable passive mode.
How to turn off passive mode in GTA Online
Follow these steps to get out of passive mode in GTA Online:
- Launch GTA Online and open the Interaction Menu.
- Scroll through the Interaction Menu and choose Disable Passive Mode.
Another way to get out of passive mode in GTA Online is:
- Launch the GTA Online menu.
- Choose Online and then Options
- Disable passive mode.
Do note that you’ll get out of passive mode 30 seconds after following these steps. Moreover, doing so initiates a 5-minute cooldown for you to get into passive mode again.
