How long to beat Black Myth: Wukong? Main story & completionist run

Bull boss in Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong finally arrives on August 20 and after waiting nearly four years since its initial announcement, you might be wondering how many hours it’ll take to beat it.

The game draws heavily from Soulslikes such as Elden Ring or Dark Souls, but the devs confirmed to us that they’re not looking to frustrate players with difficulty. It’s also much smaller in scale compared to the titles that inspired it.

So, how does this impact the time to beat? Here’s everything we know so far.

How many hours to beat Black Myth: Wukong?

Black Myth: Wukong will require around 15-20 hours to complete the main story. In a 2020 interview with IGN, Game Producer, Feng Ji, said it would take at “least 15 hours” to roll the credits, but based on our hands-on experience with the game and other reports it’s likely to take longer than that.

Leaks have suggested it will take 40-50 hours to 100% Black Myth: Wukong, which means slaying every boss and uncovering all the secrets. This has yet to be officially confirmed by Game Science, but it does seem reasonable based on what we’ve seen so far.

The Destined One fighting an enemy using a Staff in Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong features plenty of optional boss fights.

Although Wukong’s levels are fairly linear compared to the likes of Elden Ring, there’s still plenty of room for exploration. There are tons of optional bosses to find and defeat along the way, which pads out the runtime and encourages you to venture off the beaten path.

Also, while the difficulty isn’t as punishing as other Soulslikes, the enemies you’ll have to face still put up plenty of fight. The boss encounters, in particular, can be fairly tricky, so it’s worth factoring plenty of deaths and retries into the game’s length depending on your skill level.

Ultimately, your mileage will vary depending on how often you tackle the optional fights and how quickly you get through each boss.

If you’re an experienced Souls player who just wants to stick to the main objective, then you’ll likely reach the end after 15-20 hours. However, if you want to see and do everything, then it could take dozens of hours to complete a playthrough.

Black Myth: Wukong is gearing up to be one of the biggest games of 2024, so make sure your PC meets the requirements and you’ve pre-ordered your copy to jump straight in.
