FIFA 23 devs address TOTY Courtois error & promise compensation
FIFA 23’s Team of the Year promo delivered some impressive cards but an error prevented TOTY Courtois to appear. The devs addressed the issue and provided an update on player compensation.
The Team of the Year promo is widely regarded as the best part of the Ultimate Team calendar. FIFA 23 fans will receive a ton of boosted items including the TOTY squad, the TOTY 12th man, TOTY Icons, and of course the Honourable Mentions players.
While these shiny new cards are expected to slot straight into Ultimate Team starting squads, some players noticed an error getting in the way. Several players claimed that they packed the base version of Real Madrid Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
His TOTY card was supposed to be in packs and players were left furious with the massive error. Luckily, EA released a statement confirming that they’re aware of the error and working to resolve the issue for impacted players.

You may want to keep an eye out for Courtois in your recent packs. Defenders became available in Ultimate Team packs as of January 24, therefore if you’re wondering about compensation, it’s important to make sure that you didn’t pack Gold Courtois prior to this date.
EA explained that “this issue has been addressed and impacted players will receive the corrected Player Item in-game in the coming days.” Unfortunately, they didn’t reveal an exact date for when players can expect to receive compensation in the form of TOTY Courtois.
Given that Gold Courtois has been one of the best Goalkeepers in FIFA 23 since its release, players were notably pleased with the news of compensation: “happy days.”
However, not all players were thrilled about the lack of a timeline for compensation. One player joked: “Don’t worry guys, you’ll get your TOTY Courtois when TOTS starts.”
Several players in the replies also stated that the same issue was plaguing Virgil van Dijk’s TOTY card, with one reply explaining, “I packed VVD in the Prem Upgrade SBC, any update on that at all?”
There’s no telling if the issue impacting VVD is legitimate or just the result of opportunistic players looking to cash in on a free TOTY card. Nonetheless, EA is expected to look into all errors impacting TOTY cards.
