With the battle royale genre continuing to dominate the shooter market, streamer Dr Disrespect believes EA and Dice are working on a new Battlefield BR that could rival Call of Duty: Warzone.

Following the worldwide success of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, ‘battle royale’ was the next evolution of the shooter genre. All major studios including Activision with Black Ops 4’s Blackout were trying to take advantage of the BR mode’s success.

As part of 2018’s Battlefield V came Firestorm, EA and Dice’s attempt at the battle royale genre. Although boasting a huge map and a unique shrinking safe zone, it received a lukewarm reception from the battle royale community, and the lack of updates and a $60 price tag did nothing to keep it relevant.

However, ‘Battlefield 6’ is confirmed to be on the slate for 2021, and Dr Disrespect believes EA is working on an “awesome battle royale experience” with the Battlefield IP.

“It’s a no-brainer at this point,” he explained in a YouTube livestream. “EA and Activision, they’ve always gone back and forth in competing directly with the FPS genre.”

Apex Legends, another wildly successful battle royale, is also published by EA. However, Apex and Warzone largely appeal to different audiences, and while Battlefield prepares to launch its 2021 title, much of the BF community, including content creators such as JackFrags, have moved to Warzone.

As Dr Disrespect explains, it’s very likely that EA will try to recapture its player base with a battle royale of its own. “I’m excited because their engine, and all the tools and tech they have in place… they could do something pretty incredible if they put everything into it.”

Battlefield has long been known for its massive battles, destruction, and synergy between infantry and vehicle combat. Dr Disrespect believes that with the Frostbite engine at its disposal, EA could build on what’s made Warzone so successful with plenty of unique mechanics to set it apart.
