Fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare & Warzone’s gameplay will be excited to hear that Call of Duty: Vanguard will run on the same Modern Warfare engine that debuted in 2019.

Sledgehammer Games have confirmed that they have been working closely with the Infinity Ward & Activision core tech team to expand the Modern Warfare engine to support and scale for the world of Vanguard.

Their tech team confirmed that Modern Warfare’s engine makes the foundation of what Vanguard is running on, but the team has put in work to expand it to better support for the next-gen PS5 & Xbox Series X / S consoles, and to bring the World War II era to life.

The teams have worked to integrate new visual fidelity technology to create a photo-realistic world, in both Vanguard’s campaign and multiplayer modes.

Some aspects of the engine have been adapted from the world of Black Ops, bringing some of the terrain-based tools featured in recent Black Ops titles in the Modern Warfare engine.

The Sledgehammer Games team also worked to introduce a new damage layer system to the engine, which allows surfaces to accumulate damage and persist over the course of games.

This is all part of the new destructible environment features in Vanguard’s multiplayer mode, allowing players to destroy objects and create new lines of sight during a match.

Another major benefit of Vanguard running the same engine as Modern Warfare is how it will integrate with Warzone. Sledgehammer Games’ studio head, Aaron Halon, confirmed that the integration will be seamless across the Operator and weapon balance play because of the same technology.

This is a change from 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, which runs on a separate, Treyarch engine that is vastly different in core ways from Warzone’s engine.

In the meantime, players will be able to get their hands on the game over the coming weeks and months, and we have everything you need to take part in the upcoming Vanguard Alpha and Open Beta tests.
