After a long season, the finals of the Call of Duty Mobile’s World Championship finals have been canceled due to the ongoing global pandemic.

The Call of Duty Mobile World Championship takes place across eight regions, where a winning team is crowned from each. Regional playoff champions from areas of the world such as Asia, Europe, and North America were to advance to the Grand Finals to crown a world champion.

Unfortunately, these finals won’t be taking place.

Grand Finals 2020 canceled

In a Twitter post on December 7, 2020, the developers announced the cancelation. “We’ve had to make a difficult decision, but we are putting the health and well-being of our players first,” the post read. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Stage 5: Grand Finals of the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020 will not take place.”

As a result of the Grand Finals being called off, “the remaining prize pool will be distributed evenly across the Stage 4: Regional Playoff Champions.” Each team will receive just under $94,000 USD without the risk of traveling.

“After carefully reviewing the status of Covid-19 conditions, social distancing, and other safety guidelines across all regions, we do not wish to place players at risk by traveling to a hosted, live event,” the developers stressed.

With teams being from around the world, they have taken the decision not to host the event online. Unlike the CDL 2020 tournament where the majority of teams were North-American based, connection issues would be especially prominent with teams taking part from all around the world.

With the global crisis, although disappointing, it’s par for the course that events such as this are canceled. This year’s Fortnite World Cup was also called off due to complications with establishing a fair online connection cross-region.

The developers have promised there will be a future for competitive gaming within Call of Duty Mobile, and will be sharing more details in the future.
