Call of Duty League franchise team spots being sold for $25 million each
ESPN is reporting today that Activision Blizzard has begun selling spots for the upcoming franchised Call of Duty league and is asking potential team owners $25 million for a spot.
Activision Blizzard has started to approach owners across the country, and world, about a potential spot in the upcoming franchised Call of Duty league.
The company is asking team owners to report back on whether they plan to bid for a spot within the next 14 days, based on reports. Back in 2018, it was reported that Overwatch League team owners will get first bidding rights for the Call of Duty franchised league spots.
Activision Blizzard revealed their intentions to franchise the Call of Duty esports league during their financial call in February, stating they plan to launch a city based league for Call of Duty soon. Activision has been mentioning plans to franchise Call of Duty esports for a while now, but have yet to begin team sales — till now. Activision Blizzard wants to apply what they’ve done with the Overwatch League to Call of Duty. Team spots for the OWL have been sold for $20 million to up to $40 million for the two years. The OWL has 16 total teams now and is in its second season.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s esports season already underway, the franchised league for Call of Duty will probably start in 2020 with Infinity Ward’s game, set to launch later this year.
Activision did not respond to ESPN for a comment.
