Even though the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been out for a year, Apex Legends still officially isn’t ‘next-gen’ yet. However, its days of backward compatibility could be over after files in the newest update hinted at the long-awaited upgrade arriving very soon.
Respawn Entertainment’s insanely popular Apex Legends battle royale continues to pump up its number across various gaming platforms and remains one of the biggest titles in its genre.
And yet, although it’s available on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Apex Legends is still not tailored towards both consoles. A year after their release, Apex still uses basic backwards compatibility to make it playable on both hardware monsters.
PS5 and Xbox Series X are still regarded as next-gen, despite the fact they are the current-gen models now. Regardless, people are always asking when Apex Legends is coming to these consoles, and we may now have an answer.
Reliable leaker Shrugtal posted screenshots of coding from the latest Apex Legends Season 11 update, and it contained some very interesting words.
“Entries for ‘XB5’ – internal codename for next-gen Xbox, were added in the 11.0 patch, suggesting next-gen release getting very close. This and entries for the PS5 gamepad in a hotfix late last season,” said Shrugtal in a recent Tweet.
It’s hard to imagine that Respawn would input these commands into the game’s system for any other reason than Apex being ready to make the big jump to fully accommodate PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Two of the biggest differences spotted here on jumped on by fans is that the game will probably no longer support the PS4 controller and that 120 FPS will finally be an option for those with applicable TVs or monitors.
There is currently still no timeframe for when we expect this update to drop on Sony and Microsft’s newest consoles, but we’re confident that it won’t be too much longer now until we hear from Respawn on the matter.
