Apex Legends dev explain why they won't add a killcam

While killcams are a popular part of many shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, Respawn confirmed that they won’t add them to Apex Legends, and one of the devs gave a reason for this decision.

When you play a multiplayer online game, you’ll probably find yourself getting killed multiple times during a match. Titles like Battlefield and Warzone come with killcams that allow you to see exactly who got you and how they did it.

Witnessing the method that your enemy used can help you learn some neat new tricks to do better next time. So, it’s no surprise that Apex Legends fans want this feature in the battle royale, but Respawn isn’t planning to implement it.

Respawn’s Design Director Jason McCord responded to a fan’s tweet asking about the possibility of a killcam being added to Apex Legends in the future.

Players have been requesting this for a while since it would let them look at their enemy’s play, and see what mistakes they made so that they can improve. However, the dev made it clear why they won’t add this feature.

“Well, we won’t show you how you died until your whole squad is dead (otherwise you’ll have cheaty info), at which point it’s often not useful anymore,” said McCord. He then explained that they considered having one for the last kill of the game.

“Ah yeah, it’s been talked about for final kill. It’s just one of those things that costs memory on the server so we need to make sure it’s worth it. I think it’s rare enough that you win and need a killcam to know what happened that it hasn’t been a priority.”

While this fan asking the question was satisfied with this answer, this is bound to disappoint a few others that were hoping for killcams to be implemented. It would be extremely taxing of the devs to record and replay every kill.

Even if they don’t add this feature, we might see some alternative in the future, such as letting players see their enemy’s banner with a card showing information on what they used to kill them.

Respawn do listen to the fans as often as they can, and offer viable solutions to problems found in the game. They’ve have now addressed the Valkyrie and Wattson ability issues in a new update.
